Rethinking Governance for a Changing World
The environment not-for-profit organizations operate in has shifted dramatically in recent years.
Expectations are higher, resources are tighter and risks are more complex. Advancements intechnology continue to reshape how organizations work. Volunteers, employees, donors and members have more choices about where they invest their time and money.
Yet in many of those organizations, the way their Boards govern hasn’t changed much at all. They still rely on the same meeting structures, committees and reporting. They work with the same old policies and have the same old conversations.
Granted, financial oversight, compliance, policy and accountability remain essential. And good governance has always required (and always will) Boards to fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities. But those responsibilities should be the foundation of good governance not the finish line.
Good governance can’t stand still
Today’s Boards need to spend more time looking forward. It’s not just about overseeing the now but helping shape where things need to go next.
So how do they do that? By asking better questions.
What risks are emerging? Where are the opportunities? Is our organization sustainable? Are we attracting the people and resources we will need? Are our partnerships strong enough? Are we still relevant to the community, membership or stakeholders we serve?
And perhaps most importantly: Are we governing for the organization we have right now — or the organization we will need tomorrow?
Governance practices should never become permanent simply because they are familiar.
Effective Boards periodically challenge their own assumptions, evaluate how they work and adapt their practices as circumstances change.
That doesn’t mean chasing every new governance trend or making things unnecessarily complicated. In fact, often the opposite is true.
What it does mean is keeping governance clear, disciplined and purposeful. It also means being willing to question what is no longer serving the organization well.
The world is changing. Board work is changing. Good governance needs to keep pace.
