Celebrating milestones, partnerships & what’s ahead

As another busy year at The Governance Group wraps up, it’s the perfect time to look back at where we’ve been and get excited about where we’re going! From celebrating a major milestone to expanding our tools, supporting an incredible range of organizations and planning what’s next, this past year has been full of purpose, progress and plenty of learning.

Celebrating Five Years of The Governance Group

This February, we hit a big milestone: five years in business! As I said at the time, turns out time really does fly when you’re up to your elbows in bylaws and Board meetings. When The Governance Group began, the mission was simple: to help nonprofits build better governance. Yes, the pandemic was on and the future was uncertain on many fronts, but five years later that mission has grown into a full-on passion backed by authentic experiences and countless conversations with people around the province. Half a decade in, the lessons are just as rich and the work just as rewarding.

Our New Online Governance Store

Another exciting milestone this year was the launch of a new online store – essentially a one- stop shop for clear, practical governance tools. We wanted to make life easier for busy nonprofit organizations, and now resources are only a click away. From downloadable training guides, updated governing policy documents to our engaging governance game, everything is now gathered in one easy-to-use place. With quick access to valuable resources, it’s never been easier to find what you need, share it with your team and keep your Board moving forward.

Working With Incredible Organizations Across Sectors

One of the greatest privileges of this work is the sheer diversity of organizations we partner with each year. And 2025 was no exception. From housing to agriculture and health care to tourism, the breadth of the sector is constantly inspiring. This year included collaborations with 13 organizations:

  • Alberni Valley Hospice Society
  • Hornby Island Housing Society
  • BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food
  • Food Banks BC
  • BC Blueberry Council
  • Comox Valley Community Foundation
  • Cowichan Tribes
  • Arbutus Ridge Seaside Community
  • Vancouver Island Real Estate Board
  • Southern Gulf Islands Tourism Partnership
  • Adventure Day Care
  • Taking Care of the Baby Basket Society (Shuswap First Nation)
  • Greater Vancouver Realtors

Each partnership brought its own challenges, triumphs and insights. All these collaborations offer a great reminder that while every organization is unique, the need for strong governance is universal. Having the honour of working alongside such dedicated organizations reinforces why this work matters. Their commitment to community impact fuels our commitment to them.

Looking Ahead: New Packages, New Training

As we step into a new year, we’re excited to expand the way we support Boards and nonprofit societies. In 2026, we’ll be rolling out new service packages designed to meet organizations where they are, whether they need governing document reviews, policy development or specifically tailored leadership development. These focused offerings will make it easier for societies to access targeted support when most needed.

Also in development is a more modular approach to training. Think bite-sized pieces that fit easily into busy schedules while still building strong governance foundations. The goal remains the same: set Boards up for success from day one. When Board members understand their roles and have access to practical and effective tools, entire organizations thrive. The next year will be all about making that support even more accessible and flexible.

Here’s to continued collaboration and meaningful governance in the year ahead. Thanks to everyone who has played a part in making this a great year, and here’s to the next one being even better.
